The technology of aluminum pigments is still constantly improving, and its current technical development hotspots mainly focus on water-based and coating modification. In addition, improving physical indicators such as pigment fineness, shape regularity, particle size uniformity, product quality stability, etc., improving pigment dispersion and other properties, and developing color aluminum pigments and special functional aluminum pigments are also its technical development trend.
On March 1, 2015, the Chinese government promulgated a paint consumption tax with a 4% consumption tax on 420 organic solvents in 1 liter of paint, which has forced many solvent-based coating companies to turn to water-based coatings. Water-based coatings use water as a solvent or dispersion medium, and most of the slurry is weakly alkaline. Therefore, the aluminum pigments used in water-based coatings have different requirements from those used in solvent-based coatings. Aluminum pigments for water-based coatings and water-based inks must first be effectively dispersed in water, that is, pigments should be hydrophilic on the surface, and secondly, they must maintain high chemical stability in water media. Untreated aluminum pigments will react chemically with water to produce hydrogen, destroying the metal luster of aluminum, thus seriously affecting its weather resistance. Aluminum pigments treated with surface passivation or silicon dioxide surface coating have good water resistance, extremely low gas release and excellent weather resistance. Water-based aluminum pigments are one of the inevitable development directions of the aluminum pigment industry. Although international enterprises have nearly 60 years of experience in this field, the research and development of their new products has not stopped. It has been engaged in the research on the aqueousization of aluminum pigments in China for less than 10 years. The real industrial production has been in the past 5 years. There are only a few enterprises that can produce water-based aluminum pigments, and the product quality is still unsatisfactory.
